What is a TP link Router?

 

A TP link router is known to be a networking device that connects multiple networks and transmits data packets between them. The TP link or any router from anonymous brands can be used for the purpose of connection of the residential or office network (LAN) to the internet (WAN). The suitable router model can be chosen depending on the requirement of the LAN side. Some router models allow devices to be connected by both wired and wireless networks. The internet connection on the WAN side can be  disconnected through an Ethernet Port.

Steps to Set Up Internet Connection on TP-Link Router

 

The process of configuration of a TP link router is simple and listed in the following steps below:

  1.  The blue Ethernet port on the TP link router should be connected to the modem or active data jack using an Ethernet cable. 
  2. Next, the router should be plugged in and turned on by switching the power on/off button. 
  3. Connect to the wireless network which is transmitted by the router. The bottom of the device has two default keys SSID and WPA2 printed.
  4. Navigate to the link tplinkwifi.net. In your web browser. 
  5. The default username and password will have to be entered, both being “admin”. The next step is to click Login
  6. When you login, the centre panel is displayed as ‘Quick Setup’. To proceed further, click on Next. 
  7. Type the SSID you want to use with your wireless network in the Wireless Network Name panel. It is advisable to not use any personal information or specifics about your router as it might be visible to other computers nearby.  
  8. Type the password in the WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK column. Make sure to choose a password that is strong and cannot be easily guessed.
  9.  Click on the button Next.
  10. The last step is to click Finish
  11. Once this step is completed, you can disconnect from your wireless network. The account can be signed in with the new id and password.

Important Note for Additional Security: 

 

It is advisable to change the admin username and password so that any unauthorized access to your account is avoided. It would also ensure that the settings cannot be changed in the case of such access. 

 

  1. Navigate to tplinkwifi.net. In your web browser. 
  2. Login by entering the default username and password, both of which are “admin”. 
  3. Look for the option of System Tools in the left side navigation bar and click on it, and then enter your password. 
  4. Both the columns of Old username and Old password should be entered with “admin”. 
  5. Enter a new username and password in the respective columns and once this is done, click Confirm New Password. The password should include at least 1-15  characters and may or may not allow spaces. This password should not be identical to the password set for the wireless network. Be careful to not share this username or password with anyone. 
  6. Click on Save. 
  7. After this, you will be logged out. Ensure that the account can be logged in by entering the password again. 
  8. WPS, or Wi-Fi Protected Setup enables other devices to get connected to your network without the aid of a WPA2 key. If you are worried about the physical safety of your router, it is advisable to disable the WPS by clicking on the option WPS first on the navigation bar and then click Disable WPS.

Firmware Upgrade 

Step 1: 

The latest firmware version for your device needs to be downloaded. 

The first step is to choose the download center for your region on the TP-Link website. Next, select the appropriate drop downs for your TP-Link product and proceed by selecting the corresponding version of the hardware and click the option of Firmware. The available firmware will be listed. 

Step 2: 

 From the ZIP file you have downloaded, extract the firmware. 

Step 3: 

Go to Advanced, proceed to System Tools, and click on Firmware Upgrade. 

Step 4: 

Go through the Device Information section. Ensure that the firmware file you have downloaded is compatible with the Hardware Version. 

Step 5: 

Concentrate on the section related to Manual Upgrade. To locate the downloaded new firmware file, click Browse. Next, click Upgrade. 

After the last step, wait for a couple of minutes for the upgrade and reboot to complete. 

How to Enable Password Recovery?  

 

Password recovery feature allows you to recover the login password for the router if you forget the password. Reset your router to factory default in case you cannot log in to the management page. 

Note: the password recovery feature will be disabled in case you are using a TP-Link ID to log in to the web management page. For managing the TP-Link ID, go to Basic, followed by TP-Link cloud. 

 

The first step is to log in to the web interface of your router. In case you do not know how to go about it, you can refer to the following links: 

  • Follow up Advanced > System Tools > Administration and concentrate on the Password Recovery section. 
  • Check the Enable Password Recovery field. 
  • For sending the recovery letter specify a mailbox (from) and enter its SMTP Server address. Then, specify the mailbox (to) for receiving the recovery letter. In case the mailbox (from) to send the recovery letter requires encryption, choose Enable Authentication and enter the suitable username and password.

When setting the rules you can choose form one of 4 preset:  Child (0-7), Pre-Teen (8-12), Teen (13-17), and Adult (17+). Each preset has specific filters already enabled, although you can customize these preset and even add your own. You are even able to set online time limits that limit that amount of time that can be spent online each day and even bed time which disables the internet access to the affected devices for a set amount of time. Form the dashboard you are even able to view traffic history and pause their internet access.  For example if its dinner time you make sure you don’t hear “5 more minutes!”.

Step 1: 

Log in to the web browser and type the following link in the address bar:  

http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://tplinklogin.net

Then click Enter. 

NOTE: The LAN IP varies by the models. Look for it on the bottom label of the product. 

Step 2: 

Fill the username and password in the login page. Both of these are admin by default. 

Step 3: 

Look through the left side and click on Security> Remote Management. 

Step 4: 

The Remote Management function is disabled with the default setting (Port 80 and IP address 0.0.0.0) 

For enabling this function, you will have to change the Remote Management IP addresses from 0.0.0.0 to a specific authorized remote IP address. 

Changing the Web Management port to another one is necessary and some cases and acts as an addition to security. 

Step 5: 

Also, you shouldn’t  forget to click Save to save the settings. 

Important Note:

  1. You should type a specific Public IP address for the Remote Management IP Address. This  means that you can only connect to this device remotely from a computer that is using this specific IP address.
  1. Then type 0.0.0.0 Remote Management IP Address that means that you can’t connect to this device remotely.
  1. Lastly, type 255.255.255.255 Remote Management IP Address. This indicates that you can connect to the router remotely from anywhere through the Internet, although this is not recommended and please use it with caution.

4. Also, we recommend changing the default login username and password if the Remote Management feature is enabled, especially if you typed 255.255.255.255 as the Remote Management IP address.
